The New York Public Library Programs for Children and Young Adults

Libraries are the memory of humankind, irreplaceable repositories of documents of human thought and action. The New York Public Library is such a memory bank par excellence, one of the great knowledge institutions of the world, its myriad collections ranking with those of the British Library, the Library of Congress, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Virtually all of the Library’s many collections and services are freely available to all comers. In fact, the Library has but one criterion for admission: curiosity.

New York City’s Young Men’s Initiative, a comprehensive effort to tackle the broad disparities slowing the advancement of black and Latino young men, will connect young men to educational, employment, and mentoring opportunities across New York City. Key components include transformative mentoring and literacy services, connecting young men with employment opportunities and new metrics in School Progress Reports to hold schools accountable for the performance of black and Latino males.

November 2011 – January 2012

Children’s Health Fund, founded by singer/songwriter Paul Simon and pediatrician/advocate Irwin Redlener, MD, has developed the largest network of mobile medical, dental and mental health services for homeless and low-income children and their families in the United States, bringing care directly to those who need it.  Over the past 24 years, the organization has supported more than two million health care visits for disadvantaged children, often in places where doctors and health care providers are in short supply.  In New York, Children’s Health Fund programs include 2 community-based health centers, a school-based health center, and a fleet of mobile clinics aka “doctors’ offices on wheels” that travel to 13 homeless and domestic violence shelters in 4 boroughs. For more information, please visit www.childrenshealthfund.org

Coalition for the Homeless: Camp Homeward Bound Sleep-Away Camp and After School Services address the challenges of homeless children by providing summer respite and year-round quality educational and recreational programs to girls and boys living in New York City shelters. These programs improve homeless children’s school performance and provide critical life-skills training.

February – April 2012

Edible Schoolyard NYC partners with public schools in low-income areas to build, maintain and staff gardens and kitchen classrooms—all right on the school premises.  Students and families participate in all aspects of growing, harvesting, and preparing nutritious, seasonal produce. Edible Schoolyard NYC’s integrated curriculum fosters a deeper appreciation of how the natural world sustains us, and equips students with the knowledge, skills and environment required to make healthier choices and change the way they eat for life.

Friends of the High Line’s Family and Education Programs

The High Line is a public park built on an historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. It is owned by the City of New York, and maintained and operated by Friends of the High Line. Founded in 1999 by community residents, Friends of the High Line fought for the High Line’s preservation and transformation at a time when the historic structure was under the threat of demolition. It is now the non-profit conservancy working with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to make sure the High Line is maintained as an extraordinary public space for all visitors to enjoy. In addition to overseeing maintenance and operations, Friends of the High Line offers vibrant family and education programs, allowing visitors of all ages to experience the park together through the lenses of history, design, art, and horticulture. Programs include scavenger hunts, arts workshops, storytelling, creative play days, field trips, nature walks, and more. For more information, visit www.thehighline.org.

Association to Benefit Children (ABC) For children who start life destitute, abused and neglected, it may seem that destiny is set.  The Association to Benefit Children (ABC) refuses to accept that.  ABC treasures the infinite potential of every child and champions each one’s right to succeed.

Since 1986, ABC’s focus has been on New York City’s most at-risk children.  ABC creates nationally replicable program models that meet the complex needs of each family member.  Today, ABC serves thousands of children and their family members with a continuum of education, mental health, housing, prevention and supportive services from infancy through adulthood.  For more information, please visit www.a-b-c.org.
